Old town of Krems & Stein

While the old town of Krems retreats on the mountain slopes, Stein is right on the stream. The prosperity of the former port city of Stein still amazes today: richly decorated gates, oriels and architectural treasures such as the Göttweigerhof, the Minoritenkirche and the parish church. Walk from the Danube, stroll through the Rathausplatz past the Johannes Nepomuk monument and the baroque town hall along the Steiner Landstrasse, past the Kunsthalle Krems, the cartoon museum and the monastery to the Steiner Tor (the only surviving of the four city gates of Krems decorated with inscriptions and coats of arms). Upper and Lower Landstrasse, which has been the main axis of the city since the Middle Ages, is where the old ltown if kKrems begins. A short tour leads to the Gozzoburg, churches and the town hall from the 16th century, the Göglhaus on the daily market, to the Dominican Church and the Simandlbrunnen, where a wine festival takes place every June.
