South of Krems

In order to get to the wine-growing towns and locations south of Krems, we have to cross the Danube to the right bank. The Herrentrost (46 ha) in Thallern and Brunnkirchen includes the Steinhagen, Brunnfeld, Herrentrost and Satzen vineyards. Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner grow on the gravel and loess soils. Further to the west is the Frauengrund corridor (68 ha) in Angern and Thallern on pure loess grounds where mainly full-bodied Grüner Veltliner grow. The vineyards are called Maring, Schwerer Zapfen and Frauengrund. The Kremser Kogl (117 ha) around Hollenburg consists of conglomerate soil and loess layers of different thicknesses, where expressive Grüner Veltliners with good ripening potential are created. Significant vineyards: In Schrötten, Point, Hahn, Hollenburgern, In Schiefern, Neubergern, Langen-Hadinger, Kleedorf, Kogl, Lusthausberg, Wolfsberg, Holzäcker and Brunngraben.

Around the magnificent baroque Benedictine monastery in Göttweig are numerous wine towns being Furth, Palt and the somewhat more hidden wine-growing towns of Steinaweg, Paudorf, Meidling, Eggendorf, Höbenbach, Krustetten, Oberfucha and Tiefenfucha. The best known locations are Gottschelle and Oberfeld, other good vineyards are Upper and Lower Zistel, Höhlgraben and Steinbühel.
