Long-Distance Hiking in the World Heritage Region
65.2 kilometres and 2381 vertical metres in 5 days
The Wachau World Heritage Trail combines everything that makes up the UNESCO World Heritage region: picturesque villages, stunning historic cultural assets and beautiful nature. The 7-day hiking tour takes hikers through the Wachau’s most famous vineyards, up the highest mountain on the Danube and along the river by boat. From Krems, the World Heritage Trail leads hikers to Spitz, where they take the boat back to Krems on the last day, taking new impressions with them.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Individual journey to Krems, overnight stay incl. breakfast in Krems.
Day 2: Stage Krems – Dürnstein (World Heritage Trail, Stage 1)
Trail length 12.5 km – hiking time 4h 30 min
From the Medieval town centre of Krems and accompanied by magnificent views of the Danube, this popular stage leads visitors through the Wachau vineyards and a forest, to picturesque Dürnstein without any major climbs.

Day 3: Stage Dürnstein – Weißenkirchen (World Heritage Trail, Stage 2)
Trail length 16.7 km – hiking time 6h
Inspired by fantastic views and with plenty of history to boot, the hike leads from Dürnstein along a panoramic high trail through vineyards to the winegrowing village of Weißenkirchen.
Overnight stay incl. breakfast in Weißenkirchen.
Day 4: Stage Weißenkirchen – Spitz (World Heritage Trail, Stage 3)
Trail length 10.5 km – hiking time 3h 30 min
This trail leads through the heart of the Wachau vineyards with its typical stone terraces and famous vineyards high above the Danube, from Weißenkirchen to Spitz. A wine tasting experience awaits the weary hikers there.

Day 5: Stage Spitz – Mühldorf (World Heritage Trail, Stage 4)
Trail length 11.2 km – hiking time 4h
The highest and steepest wine terraces in the Wachau, sparse oak and beech forests and magnificent views of the Danube are on this somewhat challenging stage.
Overnight stay incl. breakfast in Mühldorf.
Day 6: Stage Mühldorf – Spitz (Jauerling-Runde 07)
Trail length 14.3 km – hiking time 5h
The magnificent landscape in the Jauerling Nature Park and some truly unparalleled spectacles characterise this stage: the highest point of the World Heritage Trail, the highest vineyard in Lower Austria and so much more...
Stage finish and overnight stay incl. breakfast in Spitz.
Day 7: Boat trip and journey home
After breakfast, we take the boat back to Krems. Only then do you realise how far you have travelled in the last few days, while enjoying the view of the Wachau from the water.
