West of Krems

The Pfaffenberg is located in the west of the city of Krems (more precisely in Krems-Stein). This borders  the Wachau, streches from Stein to Krems and includes a number of the best-known vineyards in old wine towns such as Goldberg, Danzern, Grillenparz, Schreck and Hund. Most of the vineyards are on primitive rock, some with loess layers, in steep terraces  facing the Danube. Riesling grows on mineral top locations, although the majority is occupied by Grüner Veltliner.

The second local mountain in Krems, the Kreuzberg, stretches over the area east of Krems far into the Wagram. On this mountain bedrock weathering soil transitions to loess. For example, Kögel in the west, with its heavily weathered slate, is predestined for delicate Rieslings. But just a few meters away, the Wachtberg with its loess soils has developed into a source for spicy, expressive Veltliner.
