Gozzo from Krems

Gozzo from Krems († um 1291) was born in the North of Lower Austria. He married a woman from Krems-Stein, Gerbirg Sevelderin, and thanks to his numerous functions and possessions he became a man of considerable influence and wealth. He was the principal of the customs office, owned a number of dairy farms, gardens, fish ponds and forests and he was paid the tithe from several properties. Between the years 1246 and 1282 he was the municipal judge of Krems several times and became procurator of Lower Austria.

With all this money, Gozzo bought a house in Krems and transformed it into a town palace of Italian flair. Today’s Gozzoburg is one of the most important buildings of that time in Austria!

After his wife’s death in 1286, Gozzo became a monk in the monastery of Zwettl, where he died a few years later.
