Special features of the "Wachau apricot"

The blissful region "Wachauer Apricot" lies in the heart of Lower Austria on both sides of the beautiful blue Danube and comprises 14 municipalities of the Wachau and the district of Krems on the Danube.

The  apricot (“Marille” or “Aprikose”) was brought around 2000 years ago by Roman legionaries in the course of the foundation of the Roman province of Noricum alongside the wine to the region south of the Danube.

The "Wachau apricot" plays a special role among all other apricot varieties. Apricot farmers have been selecting fruit types for generations, especially according to the criterion of "taste". In this way, the now famous and unique "Wachau apricot varieties" were created in the Danube valley.

The majority of the apricot trees in the "Wachau Apricot" growing region are around 50 years old and even older.

Thousands of families maintain countless, small apricot gardens in near-natural orchards. All fruits here are harvested and picked by hand and are therefore of a unique quality.

The apricot trees bloom in the region from late March to early April - a remarkable natural spectacle that is open during tourist season.

Harvest begins around 100 days after flowering, usually in early / mid-July to early August.

Anyone wishing to purchase “Wachau apricots” should contact one of the many producers directly to pre-order the fruit and make sure to process / eat soon after getting them. The sensitive fruits are not "suitable for the supermarket" because they can hardly be stored.
