The Schlüsselamtsgasse

The narrow Schlüsselamtsgasse is the connection between Pfarrplatz square and Dominikanerplatz square. The „Schlüsselamt“ was the tolls and customs office of Krems, so the taxes on goods like wine and cereals had to be paid here. The officer in charge was appointed by the sovereign, worked as his tax gatherer and had to manage his property.

The office itself was originally found at the Duke’s Court („Herzoghof“). In 1379, it was transferred to Schlüsselamtsgasse No. 6. On the house’s façade one can see the rests of a painted coat of arms showing the imperial two-headed eagle which states very clearly to whom the money collected here belonged.
